Nonhuman Primate Studies

BIOQUAL, Inc. is proud of its contributions to research with investigators at the National Institutes of Health, which have led to the development of Havrix®, the Hepatitis A vaccine; new therapies in the fight against AIDS, and the first FDA-approved Rotavirus oral vaccine.

BIOQUAL's division of Primate Biology and Medicine can supply Biosafety Level 2 or 3 housing and husbandry for infectious agent studies as well as Biosafety Level 3 laboratory practices.

All studies are directly supervised by American Association for Laboratory Animal Science certified technicians and technologists. Technicians work under the supervision of the Director and two Deputy Directors, all of whom are veterinarians, board certified or board-eligible by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, and who have extensive training and experience in nonhuman primate medicine and surgery.

A world-renowned primatologist consultant designs all the animal environments to provide optimal psychological enrichment while meeting all requirements for Biosafety Level 2/3 housing and husbandry.

A full-time, experienced animal behavior technician provides daily oversight of the psychological well-being program for all animals.

All animal holding and protocol studies fully adhere to the legal and safety standards required by the Government. All of the nonhuman primate studies are conducted by the Division of Primate Biology and Medicine.

At this time the following contract work is being performed for:

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

Contract to study hepatitis. Studies involve Hepatitis A through Hepatitis E involving isolation and treatment of the viruses, and characterization of possible new hepatitis viruses. Studies include evaluation of candidate hepatitis vaccines.

Contract to study Simian Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (SAIDS), to define the pathogenicity of the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV), to evaluate candidate vaccines to treat infection, and perform preclinical evaluation of antiviral drugs.

BIOQUAL supports the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) in a separate contract to study SAIDS.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI)

Contract to test nonhuman primate response to HIV-1, HIV-2, and SIV using mutants of the virus. The goal is to provide insight into the protection afforded by candidate vaccines.

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) - Nonhuman Primates
